July: Plastic Free Month

As the summer sun shines brighter, July becomes more than just a month of memorable holidays in Dubrovnik - it's a month dedicated to reducing plastic waste and embracing sustainable practices.

Sun Gardens Dubrovnik commitment to sustainability is evident in every aspect of our hospitality and we are thrilled to share our ongoing efforts and initiatives aimed at creating a greener, plastic-free environment.

Sustainable Amenities in Every Room

At Sun Gardens Dubrovnik 90% of room amenities are made from recycled materials. The water provided in all rooms, suites and residences is in glass bottles, significantly reducing plastic waste. By selecting glass over plastic, we save approximately 35,000 plastic bottles annually which is substantial contribution to the reduction of single-use plastics.

Collaboration with Rituals cosmetics ensures that guests can indulge in luxury while supporting eco-friendly products. Introducing paper strap slippers in summer 2024, we are pushing closer to our goal of having 99% plastic-free room amenities by the end of the year.

Plastic-Free Dining Experiences

Commitment to sustainability at Sun Gardens Dubrovnik extends into the dining experiences that we provide daily for our guests. We are proud to offer plastic-free packaging for food delivery services for all our restaurants and bars. Banquet events are devoid of plastic utensils for finger food. At breakfast, we have removed small plastic packages in favour of more sustainable options like honeycombs, and jams and spreads in reusable containers. Our food suppliers also play a crucial role in this initiative by delivering produce in wooden crates, highlighting our partnership with sustainable vendors.

For food deliveries, we exclusively use paper bags, ensuring that our commitment to reducing plastic waste permeates every level of our service.

Recycling and Waste Management

Sun Gardens Dubrovnik is equipped with a comprehensive recycling program, known as the “Recikloteka.” This includes meticulous waste segregation to ensure that plastic waste is recycled efficiently. Thanks to this system, we do not require separate plastic bins throughout the resort, as all waste is sorted and processed centrally.

In 2023, we took a significant step by replacing plastic water gallons with direct water connections through all of our offices and staff premises. This move reduced our consumption from 1,800 gallons in 2022 to zero gallons in 2023, demonstrating our commitment to minimizing plastic use.

Beach Clean-Up and Eco Workshops

Every day, our team dedicates time to clean NUKU beach, collecting any plastic waste that the sea brings in. This daily ritual not only keeps our beach pristine but also contributes to the larger effort of protecting marine life and ecosystems from plastic pollution.

Our efforts to foster sustainability extend to our youngest guests as well. Our animation team conducts Eco Workshops for children twice a month. These workshops are designed to educate and engage kids in creative activities, such as crafting with recycled plastic waste. The next workshop is just around the corner, and we can’t wait to see the innovative creations the children will come up with.

A Vision for the Future

As we celebrate July Plastic Free Month, we are reminded of the importance of each small step towards a sustainable future. From recycled room amenities to plastic-free dining and dedicated recycling efforts, Sun Gardens Dubrovnik is committed to leading by example. We believe that by working together, we can achieve a significant reduction in plastic waste and inspire others to follow suit.

Join us in our journey towards a plastic-free future. Every action counts, and together, we can make a difference. Here’s to a sustainable July Plastic Free Month!
