South Dalmatia Regatta

The sight of hundreds of billowing white sails set on a turquoise blue sea is one that warms the heart.

Sailing and the nautical world in general is not a hobby in this part of the world - it is quite simply a way of life. With the gorgeous Adriatic Sea on the doorstep of the region it is hardly surprising that sailing forms such an important role in life.

The South Dalmatia Regatta is traditionally held in August in the region and attracts prominent nautical names from all over the world. The event is organised by the Orsan Yacht Club in Dubrovnik and begins in the channel between the island of Korčula and the Pelješac Peninsular in the picturesque town of Orebić. In fact this regatta is one of the longest, and it could be argued most scenic, regattas in Croatia. With the crack of the starter’s pistol the race begins in Orebić before winding its way down the coastline of Korčula and the island of Mljet before finishing in Dubrovnik. It’s quite a journey and quite a sight.

The regatta has been held almost continuously for the past three decades and apart from being a popular event for navigators it is also an attraction for guests to the region. On the eve of the race a party is held in Orebić, entitled Night of the Pelješac Sails, at which the sailors and competitors mix with the locals and the tourists in a farewell send-off.

The South Dalmatia Regatta usually takes place in the beginning of August; if you really needed an excuse to visit Dubrovnik in the middle of summer - now you have it.
